BINTANGS (NL)
Bintangs was founded in 1961 by Frank and Arti Kraaijeveld. Together with Meine Fernhout and Jimmy Jansen, the band mainly played indo-rock. Two years later they started creating their own style, the so-called blast furnace sound; rough and raw rhythm & blues. The band's performances became increasingly popular and in 1965 they released their first single, called You Can't Judge a Book by Looking at the Cover. A year later, the Bintangs were the support acts for The Rolling Stones in Den Bosch and - the then world-famous - The Kinks. In 1967, the band released their first LP: Blues on the Ceiling. Their songs were well received and in 1969 they even had their first top 10 hit single to their name with the song Travellin' in the USA. Tours through the Netherlands and Belgium followed. After their first album, the Bintangs released a total of 23 more albums, including Genuine Bull (1975), which was recorded in England, and Livetime (1983).
In 1985, the band decided it was time for a sabbatical. A legendary 'farewell concert' was given in Paradiso Amsterdam. In 1989, a reunion was held and the band gave twelve concerts in the twelve Dutch provinces. This was so successful that the band returned. In the following years, the band toured the Netherlands and Belgium and released new CDs, including Dynamite Night (1996), which was recorded live during their five-hour concert in a sold-out Paradiso. The album Doc (2006) was released in honor of the 45th anniversary. Frank Kraaijeveld made a hundred hand-painted covers especially for this. In addition to the CD, a DVD was also released, called Document - 45 Years of Rock 'n Roll. This includes the concert in the Patronaat in Haarlem, home videos, historical moments, photos and a TV special that was broadcast by RTV Noord-Holland.
Bintangs is the oldest existing rock band in the Netherlands, but still very much alive. In 2019, the band was inducted into the Dutch Blues Hall of Fame. Bintangs has had many formations, but today consists of Frank Kraaijeveld (bass and vocals), Dagomar Jansen (vocals, guitar and mouth harp), Burt van der Meij (drums) and Marco Nicola (guitar, slide guitar).
